Do you know what a “fatberg” is? It’s something you do not want! It is when chunks of food and grease collect together in your septic system and form large masses. These can really mess up your septic system and cost you money.

To avoid “fatbergs”, take care of your sink drain. Watch what you wash down. Grease in its liquid form may seem to easily slide down your drain, but don’t let it. Once it cools it can solidify and cause a lot of grief. If you have greasy pans or plates, for example, leftover bacon grease, wipe it off before washing it in your sink or putting it in your dishwasher. Use a paper towel to get the grease off first. Scrape off food chunks into the trash.

Also, make use of a good sink strainer basket to collect little food remnants, not allowing them to wash down your pipes. These often come in silicone or stainless steel. Both work well. The stainless steel might last longer and not get discolored like the silicone ones. Both can easily be thrown into your dishwasher for regular cleaning.
